Wrinkle Reduction Treatments

Injections for Upper Facial lines (Botulinum Toxin (Type A) & Dermal filler injections)

The structure of the skin changes with time and it becomes less elastic and flexible. Muscles in the face also begin to sag and the skin becomes creased and folded. Older skin is drier and it renews itself less quickly than younger skin. All these factors affect how facial skin looks and can result in frown lines and wrinkles which can make you look more tired, angry or older than you really are.

Many people wish to look and feel as good as possible for their age while maintaining a natural look.  Following a consultation and examination, we will discuss the options available for you, e.g. Peels, Dermal fillers, Profhilo, Collagen Stimulation or injections of botulinum toxin may be recommended following your consultation to help achieve this. The aim is to produce a natural relaxed look without the “frozen” appearance.

There are different types of products available and  Mr Humzah Consultant Plastic Surgeon will discuss this with you. The specific uses and possible outcomes will be discussed in detail during your consultation. In the UK there are different botulinum toxins available: Botox®, Azalure®, and Bocoutoure® are the most commonly used ones. These have slightly different on-label use and we will discuss these with you.

Other preparations such as dermal fillers are also available to manage facial lines and Mr Humzah Consultant Plastic Surgeon or the Medical Practitioner will discuss the various cosmetic treatments (surgical and non-surgical) and their differences with you.

What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a protein that blocks the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical pulses that elicit muscle contraction. In medicine, Botulinum toxin is a Prescription Only Medicine that has to be prescribed by a registered Medical practitioner and is injected directly into hyperactive muscles. It has been safely and effectively used for the treatment of strabismus(cross-eye) and blepharospasm (lid spasm) since the early Eighties.

How does Botulinum toxin work?

Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crow’s feet. Injecting Botulinum toxin into the affected area temporarily paralyzes the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother and disappear altogether. Botulinum toxin therapy cannot replace wrinkle correction methods such as collagen stimulation, laser peeling or autologous fat transplantation when these are necessary; the Aesthetic Team will explain these procedures as well.

When and how long does botulinum toxin work?

The initial effects of treatment may become visible within 48 to 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks. The smoothing effect of the first treatment with the injection usually lasts for up to 4 months. Your facial expression will become more relaxed but by no means mask-like. The overall result is very natural. The effect of the treatment generally lasts for 4 to 6 months. Re-treatment is then required.

How is the treatment performed?

A minute quantity of botulinum is injected into the muscles that cause dynamic lines, for example frown lines. The botulinum injection temporarily prevents nerve signals from reaching the muscle and, as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscles relaxes, the skin smoothes out. Treatment with botulinum can take as little as 10 minutes and most people return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Mr Humzah uses the world’s thinnest needle (TSK Invisible Needle) to help reduce the pain of injection and to make sure you get an accurate dose, he may also use the specially designed 3-Dose Syringe Injector to achieve accurate dosage during the procedure.

The current regulations stipulate that there must be a “cooling off” period following the consultation for new patients. You will therefore not be able to have your treatment on the same day as your consultation if you are a new patient.
